PLACE* is the theme of this year’s conference:
place, n. /plās/
A particular part or region of space; a physical locality, a locale; a spot, a location. Also: a region or part of the earth’s surface.
place, v. /plās/
put in a particular position; find a home or employment for.
The places people come from influence who they are, and people impact the places they inhabit. Sometimes, even after a place is gone, its memory and its impact remain. But onto place we can build more: transplace, displace, misplace. We can be placeists or feel placeless. What makes a place what it is? What happens to a place after it is replaced with a new place? What parts of a place can be left behind, and what can we take with us? Finally, what happens to places when people don’t think about tomorrow?
